After being temporarily separated on different streaming services, all 7 movies in the main Alien franchise will finally be available to stream together on Hulu starting March 1, 2025. Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez of Evil Dead (2013) and Don’t Breathe fame, arrived on the Hulu streaming platform in November 2024 after a successful box office run, placing it as the second highest-grossing film in the entire series. Safe to say, Álvarez’s legacy sequel has ensured the iconic sci-fi horror franchise’s place in the theatrical landscape under its new Disney ownership. This is unlike the Predator franchise, which saw the critically acclaimed Prey ditch theaters and head straight to streaming as a “Hulu Original” release in 2022.
Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), Alien: Resurrection (1997), Prometheus (2012), Alien: Covenant (2017), and Alien: Romulus (2024) will all be under the same streaming roof in March 2025, meaning that Hulu subscribers can now host marathons with their friends from the comfort of their own homes. This comes just in time for diehard Alien fans to get prepared for future projects that are due for release over the next couple of years.
All 7 Alien Movies are Coming to Hulu on March 1, 2025
The entirety of the Alien anthology stands out in the vast library of prolific sci-fi franchises thanks to its variety in directors, tone, and even genre. While the original 1979 film directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Gladiator) stands out as the bone-chilling beginning of this saga and introduces Sigourney Weaver as beloved heroine Ellen Ripley, James Cameron’s Aliens redefined what a sequel should be with its drastic change in tone and bombastic action. This thrill factor would continue to evolve throughout the subsequent movies, just like the deadly Xenomorphs themselves.
Alien 3, the directorial debut of David Fincher (The Social Network, Se7en), is a much more complicated film than the previous two entries, with studio interference and creative differences leading to a butchered version of Fincher’s vision. There are ways to access the popular“Assembly Cut” ofAlien 3, which producer Charles de Lauzirika oversaw since Fincher no longer wanted anything to do with the movie. Dedicated fans have deemed it to be the superior version of Alien 3, but only the original, incredibly divisive cut of the trilogy capper will be coming to the Hulu streaming service on March 1st.
From 20th Century Fox to Disney
The studio, formerly known as 20th Century Fox, attempted to continue the franchise with Alien: Resurrection. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie) and written by Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Resurrection is packed with ’90s angst and complicated shenanigans such as introducing a clone of Ellen Ripley (and, at the time of this writing, Sigourney Weaver’s last appearance in the series) and a new supporting cast with the likes of Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, and Dan Hedaya. For quite some time, this was considered the most “out there” Alien film.
However, after more than 3 decades, director Ridley Scott eventually returned to the sci-fi world he created, going all the way back to where everything began with 2012’s Prometheus. A prequel to the events of the first film, Prometheus provides an origin story of sorts for the terrifying Xenomorph creature at the heart of every Alien adventure and features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron.
The loose connections and self-contained plot of Prometheus posited fascinating questions about the origins of mankind and the purpose of existence. However, in an unpredictable move, Scott then brought the series back to its famous horror roots in the 2017 sequel, Alien: Covenant. Michael Fassbender made a sinister return as the fan-favorite villainous android David, but Covenant ended up underperforming at the box office with a $240 million worldwide gross.
The Latest Update on the ‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel
Disney’s acquisition of Fox has, of course, led to the Alien series being brought back once more in 2024 with Alien: Romulus. The Ridley Scott-produced movie, set between Alien and Aliens, stars a new and young ensemble cast. But the two leads in particular, Rain, played by Cailee Spaeny (Civil War, Priscilla), and her brother-like android Andy, played by recent BAFTA-winner David Jonsson (Rye Lane, HBO’s Industry), have found no trouble winning over the hearts of moviegoers. Fede Álvarez boasts sharp direction that takes the best parts of the anthology and mixes them up to create a gripping survival horror film.
Thanks to Alien: Romulus‘ box office, a sequel has now been greenlit by the newly-branded 20th Century Studios, with Fede Álvarez returning to write and direct. Álvarez has remained cryptic about what audiences can expect for the next entry in the Alien franchise, only teasing that it would feature the return of characters like Rain and Andy, who managed to survive the horrifying events of Romulus. In a recent interview with Collider, the Uruguayan filmmaker spoke about entering new territory with a sequel, saying:
“For a sequel now, I think there’s a vast horizon in front of us for where we can go because Alien is so many things. Alien is Alien, it’s Prometheus, and everything in between. It’s such a big universe. I think now I would love to go, and the plan is to go into truly uncharted waters for the franchise.”
The Alien Franchise will Next Debut on the Small Screen with ‘Alien: Earth’
The sequel to Alien: Romulus doesn’t currently have a release date, but Disney could very well schedule it for the end of 2026 or sometime in 2027 at the very earliest. Whatever the case, the Alien fanbase will have plenty of time to revisit all 7 movies in the main franchise on Hulu before the next big-screen installment.
In addition to the previous Alien movies and the upcoming Romulus sequel, a new FX television series titled Alien: Earth is set to premiere on Hulu this summer. Created by Noah Hawley (FX’s Fargo, Legion), the show is set two years before the events of the original film, with each episode written and directed by Hawley himself. Based on the show’s mysterious early marketing, viewers can only guess that the FX series will follow a spaceship that crash lands on Earth and releases the Xenomorphs on humankind for the first time ever.
It’s a great time for Hulu subscribers and Alien fans alike, as the complete set of films will soon be available for streaming on March 1, 2025, giving people several months to reacquaint themselves with the unrelenting terror of the Xenomorphs before Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth premieres later this year.
